Shake Baby Until It Dies Update

shakebabytweet We went live with the our Baby Shaker story early this morning around 1:00am PST, including an announcement on Twitter. The first retweet was at 5:30am PST by @Dixwifey. From there, the word started to spread. We made a timezone re-tweet at 10:45am PST and after that, all hell broke loose with multiple re-tweets, passionate comments and outcries towards Apple requesting that Baby Shaker be removed from the App Store.

At 11:07am PST, CNET broke the Baby Shaker story on their site (crediting KRAPPS). Shortly thereafter, Tech Crunch broke the story (crediting CNET). Twitter was going off with Baby Shaker tweets and retweets (still is at the time of writing). At approximately 3:30pm PST, mainstream media has picked up the Baby Shaker story: New York Times, Boston Herald, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times and more by the minute via Google News search.

In the end, the people were heard and Apple removed Baby Shaker … but not without exposure to a seriously flawed application approval system.

Child abuse is not funny … shaking a baby on your iPhone until it dies is just F’ed up (just read the viewer comments below for real life child abuse horror stories) and not a laughing nor entertaining matter.

To conclude, reading the various Baby Shaker buzz, we’ve been noticing that Apple fanboy thinks Apple can do no wrong … saying Baby Shaker is not Apple’s fault, rather the developers. Uhhhh, WRONG NUT JOB! Apple is 100% responsible for the products they sell. Doesn’t matter if they developed it or not … if Apple sells it, they are responsible for the product … so STFU Apple fanboy and mix in a dose of reality.

yeah this is a shitty app and its not funny at all but i find it funny how people are screaming for apple censorship... Big Daddy apple pleeeassee take the bad app away... Oh brother.. Wake up people make decisions on your own! IF you don't like the app don't support it hit em where it hurts their wallet or send em a bad review.. Don't ask for censorship or you might end up going down the wrong path with unintended consequences.
  • The following could make for an interesting quiz app. Hopefully they'll soothe everyone's nerve here.

    # What is funnier than a dead baby?
A dead baby in a clown costume.
    # What is the difference between a baby and a onion?
No one cries when you chop up the baby.
    # What is the difference between a dead baby and a water melon?
One's fun to hit with a sledge hammer, the other one's a water melon.
    # What is the difference between a baby and a dart-board?
    Dart-boards don't bleed.
    # What is the difference between a baby and a mars bar?
    About 500 calories.
    # Why did the family take the dead baby along on the cookout?
So they could light it and toast their marshmallows.
    # Why was the dead baby kept in the kitchen drawer?
The family used it to crack nuts.
    # Why do people keep dead babies in the rec. room?
They cut off one leg and use it as a ping pong paddle.
    # Why do you put babies into blenders feet first?
So you can see the expression on their faces.
    # Why do they boil water when a baby is being born?
So that if its born dead they can make soup.

Any app could potentially offend some segment of the population. I mean some apps even let you shoot and kill people. How about all the victims of gunshot wounds? If you don't agree with the app, don't buy it. It's as easy at that. People need to relax.
  • David
Hey guys, what's freedom of speech? Calm the fuck down, these guys had every right to make this app as much as those who make "omg funny fart app 17!!!" I would purchase this app if it was still up just to make you guys bawww even more. It actually looks pretty funny.

OOPS! When I hit the post button, the server died and I couldn't get back on for 40 minutes. Posted again and then realized that the post-bomb actually made it to the server. That's OK. It really IS worth reading twice. Don't you think? :)

I too, was horrified by the release of Baby Shaker. I wrote a letter to Steve Jobs asking that it be removed. I'm sure it wasn't my letter that did it, but the application is now removed. I completely understand the outrage expressed here, and I share it with many of you.

However, put the blame where blame is due. Sikilisoft. They are the morons who sat in their bedroom, doing bong-hits and Redbull, and playing Halo, and decided that making an application that let you shake a baby would be "totally wicked dude...hey! I can't feel my skull!"

Then get pissed at the Apple reviewer who, after looking at the 400th version of yet another application to let your friends know "What are you doing?" on Twitter, accidentally double-tapped the approval button and released this terrifying piece of shit on the world.

But please, please, please, quit acting like Apple developers programmed this and had malice in their hearts when they nefariously released this on an unsuspecting population. It just wasn't the case.

Besides, if Apple released it, it would have been called, "iBabyShaker".

Want to really vent your spleens in the appropriate direction? Send your email here: sikalosoft@gmail.com. They are the teenage dumbasses that are responsible. And I'll bet that they become the first teenage dumbasses to actually exceed the server space of a GMail account.

Let them have it. They deserve every ounce of your vitriolic rage. Apple does not. They deserve a few ounces. Not more.

    Nice work as always krapps!

People might like to know there is a free child abuse prevention month app available which provides info and support. Have a look.
  • dsaf
    Child abuse?

There's an app for that, too.
  • I just want to say that I am what you would call an "Apple Fanboy". Well, not as much as some, but still. When I heard about this app this morning, I just couldn't believe what I heard.

I don't know how many people Apple has "screening" the apps before they are released, and how much education they have. However, Baby Shaker is clearly an app that should never have seen the light of day. Of course, there are hundreds if not thousands of other apps that also should not be in the AppStore right now, but it appears that Apple doesn't seem to mind them being there.

As someone currently developing an app for the store myself, I see all too often applications out there that probably took the developer all of 5 minutes to write and are out there in the store attempting to sell for $1 and on rare occasions $1,000. When I see the $1000 apps, I report them to Apple right away. I don't care what their content is, the app had better be worth $1000 if they are selling it for $1000. Don't show me a single screenshot of a title screen and not have a website backing the software up. Otherwise I'm calling SCAM.

Anyway, I don't know if it was your site or someone close to your site that first brought this app to Apple's attention, but good for you for doing so, who ever did it! As fans of Apple and the iPhone/iPod touch, we need to make sure that Apple does the right thing with situations like these.
  • im sorry to say that this may just be the start of it, im sure someone disturbed will be picking helpless animals soon enough.

Im suprised PETA hasnt tried to push the line with anti-fur app yet...
  • Miles Edgeworth
Of course apps like this should not be allowed. Of course it is horrible. Of course someone overlooked something.

Get real people, things like that happen all the time. They shouldn't, but they do. People are not perfect and guess what: Apple is run by people and so is their approval process.

Blogs like this one illustrate plainly why there is a difference between journalism and so called "blogging". The one is a carefully learned craft and the other all too often just the venting of personal anger towards someone or something.

    word.
  • Wow really awful
  • I WONDER how come Apple could play with the emotions like this.. I hope apple won't repeat the same mistake again in future..

Didn't anyone chase your link from the first story to the site freely hosted at Google Sites? It's still there (6PM CDT). Chase that link, then the "Report Abuse" link at the bottom. Google needs to shuck that stuff, too.

More than one person/company can be in-the-wrong at the same time.
  • 5:30pm PST ... the dev's Baby Shaker site has been removed ... nicely done!
  • We know that reporting the link to Google was advised in the previous article's comments ... perhaps priority #1 was to get Apple to remove Baby Shaker from iTunes and next item on the agenda, take down the Baby Shaker site via Google.
