Zombies vs Sheep – Serious Gaming Action, Not Just For Zombie Geeks

First off, I will have to admit that I am a total zombie nerd. I’ve read zombie novels and I’ve written a zombie screenplay. Heck, I even gave a five’>five minute presentation on surviving a zombie uprising. At no point did I ever stop and think to myself, "Hey, what if you added sheep to the zombie motif?" Until now, that is! With a distinctive graphical style that looks like cardboard cutouts on string and a set of controls that will have you feeling like you are patting your head and rubbing your tummy (while shooting stuff, of course), Zombies vs. Sheep [iTunes] from Clickgamer is a rollicking good time.

As the Shotgun Shepherd, your first task is to protect your sheep from the undead hordes that will descend wave upon wave, hell-bent with intent for guttin’ your mutton. And they’ve brought a few friends to the party as well: vampire bats, phoenixes and the tentacled boss. But don’t shoot the doves, since they give out goodies to help keep you going.

In addition to tapping the screen to aim and shoot, you must also tilt the phone to slide the sheep back and forth, either to pick up the coins that fall when a zombie is hit or to avoid contact with the flaming zombie head that occurs when you fail to hit your mark. Of course, you also have to reload from time to time and here you get a choice: either give the phone a quick flick shake or just tap on the ammo. I started out using the shake in the earlier rounds, but when there’s a screen full of baddies in the later rounds, I found the tap to be more effective since I could keep my eye on the action.

After you’ve accumulated some money, you can visit the upgrade shop where you can improve the speed of your sheep, increase the amount of ammo you get on each reload and other items necessary for survival in the later rounds. One thing you can’t buy (because it falls as a gift during the game) is the assault rifle. Catch this little gem of mayhem and you get to start mowing down your enemies at a frenzied pace. The screenshots I grabbed don’t really do it justice (I had to borrow another pair of hands just to get any screenshots in this game, it is that fast-paced). In the later rounds, the daylight fades and the enemies get stronger (’cause night time is the right time for zombie shenanigans).

At the time of this writing, the game is a steal of a deal at just 99 cents [iTunes].

Chess Wars For iPhone Is Solid anti-KRAPPS

Released about two weeks ago, Chess Wars [iTunes] by Blunder Move incorporates Facebook Connect functionality to allow you to challenge opponents and make your moves all from the comfort of your iPhone or iPod Touch. The app’s ultra-clean interface will not get in the way while you wield chess mastery over your friendly foes. The first order of business, of course, is to find someone to play against. This person will need to be your friend on Facebook and will also need to have the Chess Wars app (the developer’s website mentions that a web client is planned for the future). Once identified as meeting these criteria, you are able to issue a challenge and the game is underway. For your friends who do not yet have the app, you can send them an invitation, which presumably offers them a link to quickly locate the application in the App Store.

The game board is very well represented, with easily identifiable pieces and, for chess novices, the legal moves highlighted when a piece is selected. An in-game chat offers the ability to taunt (or praise, if you so choose) your opponent with witty banter. The chat messages and the move notifications can also be sent to the Facebook account (this is turned on by default). The previous moves registered in the game are always available for careful review, quiet contemplation and perhaps a bit of uninhibited consternation.

Since the game’s success is dependent on widespread adoption, it has been priced accordingly at the minimum 99 cents. Sure, there are other chess apps in the App Store which feature an AI to play against. This app is clearly positioned as the choice for playing against your Facebook friends and it’s also 100% anti-KRAPPS Certified!

The game currently has a few issues for which the developer has already submitted an update. These are mostly minor annoyances and do not detract from gameplay.

Crazy Letters App Fittingly Developed By A Crazy Dev

We have this friend named Mike (yes, that’s his real name) … Mike has issues. He’s the guy who’ll notice if a picture hanging in his house is slightly crooked and just has to straighten it immediately. He’s the guy who organizes his CD collection by genre, then record label, then producer, then alphabetical, then release date, then SKU. He’s the guy who barely passed Writing Composition because he could never quite start off writing his term paper correctly. Mike characterizes his behavior as being a perfectionist … we think he’s simply a freak.

However, his “Freak” is our “Gain”. You see Mike is also a talented app developer … and of course, being the freak … errr … perfectionist he is, no way is Mike going to release some piece of krapp. Nope … when Mike releases an app, he makes sure his development behavior is 110% over-the-top.

Take for example his latest app … Nabbed [iTunes] … right from the get go, he didn’t think the name was perfect enough, so he changed it to Crazy Letters. The Crazy Letters app enables you to apply letters, numbers and punctuation to any image in your iPhone’s camera roll or from taking a picture within the app … thus creating a custom caption.

There are over 500 characters to choose from. The characters are ransom note-style … meaning cut outs from magazines, each with a unique color, style and font. Ok … so most normal people would simply purchase a ransom note font package and program it into the app. But not our friend Mike. Poor bastard sat there for months … hand cutting letters, numbers and punctuation from countless stacks of magazines … putting them in piles … the A’s, the B’s, the C’s, etc … then scanned and Photoshopped each one into digital files. Seriously, who does this kind of stuff … total freak.

But like we said, his “Freak” is our “Gain” … because the final product of Crazy Letters is absolutely superb. The user interface is simple and intuitive, the processing is fast and smooth … and of course the hand cut graphics are outstanding. You can position each word anywhere with a touch of a finger, change the style of letters by simply shaking your phone, save to camera roll, email to friends or upload directly to Flickr. The possibilities with Crazy Letters are endless … and for only 99 cents, provides hours or repeat entertainment.

Sure enough, Mike is already freaking out about Crazy Letters … thinks it needs improvements … so he’s submitted an update for approval which will give pinch to scale ability. Yeah, that and he’s still cutting out letters from magazines by hand … LOL – poor dude has no life. Help this psycho out and purchase Crazy Letters … maybe we can get him enough bank where he will finally put down the scissors before he hurts himself.
