If You Sudoku, Sudoku 2 HD Pro is For You [iPad App Review]

I think Finger Arts, the developers of Sudoku 2 HD Pro [iTunes $2.99] for the iPad (and Sudoku 2 [iTunes Free] and Sudoku 2 Pro [iTunes $2.99] for the iPhone/iPod Touch), may have missed a better name for these apps: Squeeeeeeee!doku. This is based on a conversation I had earlier this week that went something like this:
My Wife (the Nth level black belt Sudoku master): "What are you playing over there?"
Me: "Oh, I’m checking out Sudoku 2 HD Pro to writeup for KRAPPS this week. It’s also"
My Wife (notice that she is completing my sentence here): "available for the iPhone and iPod Touch. I play it all the time, it’s my favorite Sudoku app."
Me: "Well, now, you can also play it on the iPad and it looks great"
My Wife: "Squeeeeeeee!"
See, there it is, product marketing gold.
Having played it a bunch this week, I can see why it’s her fave. The app takes the familiar Sudoku game and gives it a friendly little spank in the form of a continuously decreasing multiplier that is used to generate a score. And if you’re going to have a score, you might want to compare your high scores to those of Bob from accounting and Yuri the yak farmer from, um, wherever yaks are farmed, right? You’ve got it, in the form of OpenFeint integration.
As I said before, the app looks great. In the Pro version, there are three different board styles: Tiles, Classic and Glass and you can play in either landscape or portrait layout. The free version doesn’t have the Glass style and can only be played in the portrait layout, but it’s otherwise the same game, giving you ample opportunity to try before you buy.
Lush ambient music and sound effects add to the enjoyment.
If you like Sudoku, I would definitely recommend giving this app a look, especially if you are playing on an iPad. If you don’t currently like Sudoku games, the added elements of scoring and such should give you a reason to give this one a try. It might just change your view of Sudoku forever.

Farting Animals Episode 1 [iTunes Free] is categorized as an Educational application and per its description, “is a series of interactive storybooks that keep the readers engaged with its characters through touch interaction … this innovative storybook maximizes the combined effects of gameplay and learning with touch features.”
Interactive storybooks – engaged readers – touch interaction … certainly sounds like a fantastic and effective educational experience parents should seek out immediately. And we’re delighted to see developer Papa’s Frog putting the iPad’s magical technology to life-changing use … teaching kids about farts. Yep … numbers, shapes, letters and everything else on Sesame Street is so overrated. Farts are imperative and should be included as part of a well-rounded children’s curriculum.
Dogs farting – bears shitting in the words … some serious educational benefits as described by the app (seriously?) …
Farting Animals provides the following educational benefits:
Adds an element of touch to visual and aural stimuli, eliciting action responses that enable the reader to more easily engage with the characters and better focus on the story.
Uses words that pique children’s attention, such as “fart” and “poop,” to help them learn in an entertaining way about naturally curious subjects such as body functions.
We wish Papa’s Frog well with future episodes of Farting Animals … hard not to love a developer whose one sole principle is, “to give pure inspiration and hope to the younger generation by creating stories that are warm and sincere, like a parent’s bedtime story; to touch their hearts and fill them with love” <- heavy stuff those fart, heavy stuff man!

Nothing really clever or slick about Sicko … it’s exactly as the app describes:
The most disgusting, horrifying and gross medical images around. Gross yourself and your friends out with blood and gore and many horrific and shocking injuries and infections.
THE SICKEST APP IN THE APP STORE!
The only purpose of Sicko is to serve up healthy portions of gunshot wounds, tooth decays, open sores, gangrene and an assortment of other appetizing pleasantries.
Although we completely disagree with the positioning of the app … we highly recommend Sicko to all those demented freaks who get off on these types of shocking and disturbing images. However like we said … the app is being marketed all wrong. Sell Sicko as a “curb your appetite” / “weight loss” application and you’re in for App Store $$ GOLD $$ !

In case you missed it … Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, turned the big SIX-O on Wednesday. Why should you care? Because Woz is the most awesome person in the entire computer industry. He’s not one of those typical C-Suite arrogant pricks … Woz is totally cool, likeable and approachable. Heck, dude camped out overnight in front of an Apple Store to purchase both the iPad and iPhone 4 … just hanging out with us common peeps.

It’s really good stuff and drives home the message of why Woz is a universally loveable icon by geeks worldwide.
